How to MAXIMISE SAR? - JamesB - 05-15-2017 04:14 AM

Hi all, I'm an undergraduate student in medical physics conducting a summer internship on SAR (Specific absorption rate) levels in MRI.

I'm just wondering what would be the best method to get the maximum possible heating of a phantom in the shortest period of time? This would reduce heat loss from the phantom.

For high SAR we want:
• High magnetic field (obviously)
• Short TR
• High Flip angle – 180 degrees preferably
• High number of slices in an acquisition
• High number of echoes in multi-echo sequence

I'm currently thinking about using either a FLAIR or a STIR sequence. I'm just wondering would anyone have suggestions for different sequences?
Thanks in advance for your help.
